Wingate Du Pont Vice President - Photo Products Department Phillip J. Wingate, a businessman and writer of gently humorous essays on the chemicals that appear naturally in our environment, retired from the Du Pont Company Jan. 31. During his career he found time to serve his college, Washington College, Chestertown, Md., as chairman of its board of governors, and to practice his principal avocation—writing. His articles, which draw on his wide knowledge of chemistry and other sciences, have appeared in The Baltimore Sun, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wilmington News-Journal and other publications. One essay, "Of Horseradish and Humility," which first appeared in Du Pont Context magazine, was reprinted in more than 50 newspapers and magazines around the world. Dr. Wingate joined Du Pont in 1942 as a research chemist at the Jackson Laboratory in Deepwater, N.J. His early career was spent with the Organic Chemicals Department. In 1963, he was named assistant general manager of the Elastomer Chemicals Department and in 1966 was appointed assistant general manager of Photo Products. He became general manager of our department in December 1969 and was appointed a vice president in December 1971. Born in Wingate, Md., he has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and mathematics from Washington College and master's and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Maryland. Dr. Wingate is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, a member of the American Chemical Society, Society of Chemical Industry, American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, University of Delaware Research Foundation, Lehigh University Visiting Committee in Chemistry and the Franklin Institute. Dr. Wingate is also a member of Sigma Psi, Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies. (See reverse for Phil Wingate's parting comments.)
